About

I write adult science fiction and fantasy, represented by Caitlin McDonald of the Donald Maass Literary Agency. I'm a companion animal veterinarian with an undergraduate degree in biochemistry. I went to vet school in New Zealand, where I got to work with kiwi, penguins, and cool endangered species like tuatara and takahe.

Sci-fi embodies everything I love about fiction: creative settings and technologies, speculation, observations about society and the human condition, and just boundary-pushing in general. And space battles and explosions and things. I love all the ideas and dreaming that arose in old sci-fi movies and books, and how real life takes those things from authors' imaginations and makes them real.

My writing is somewhat speculative and largely indulgent. I like the what-ifs, the what-would-you-dos, and I enjoy smashing ideas together to make interesting cultures and settings. But I'm not above secret identities, magic powers, space battles, and romance. I should also mention I love diverse characters, particularly of the LGBT variety, but ability and ethnicity are fair game, too.

I've been hugely influenced by the giants in my genre, such as Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert, and H. G. Wells. I bow down before their brilliance and am grateful for how they helped make science fiction what it is today.
